Abu Muhammad al-Jariri Rahimahullah said that he was present beside Hadhrat Junayd
al-Baghdadi Rahimahullah (d. 298H) when the time of his death was near. The day
was friday and Junayd was reciting the Noble Quraan.
Abu Muhammad al-Jariri said to him "Oh Abul Qasim! have some mercy on yourself"
Junayd replied: "Oh Abu Muhammad! do you know of anyone more in need of this
ibaadah than myself, do you not see that my roll of deeds is being
rolled-up"
Before his death Junayd (Rahimahullah) ordered that all the saying of knowledge
attributed to him which people have written down should be buried. When people
asked him the reason he said, "When the people have the knowledge of Rasoolullah
Sallalaahu alyhi wa Sallam with them, I desire that I may meet Allah Ta'ala in the state that there remains nothing attributed to me".
After his death Shaykh Ja'far al-Khaldi Rahimahullah saw him in a dream. Ja'far
al-Khaldi asked Junayd "How did Allah Ta'ala treat you?"
Junayd Rahimahullah replied:
طاحت تلك الاشارات وغابت تلك العبارات وفنيت تلك العلوم ونفدت تلك الرسوم, وما نفعنا الا ركعات نركعها في الاسحار
"Those subtle signs were finished, those phrases disappeared, those sciences were
annihilated, those illustrations were erased and nothing helped us except some
raka'aat which we used to pray at sahar".
